Commitment to Sustainability

At Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella, we believe that working to protect the environment is very important to our employees, our clients, and our communities. We recognize that much of what we do, including operating a law firm, impacts the environment. We also recognize that it is our responsibility to do what we can as individuals and as a firm to support sustainability efforts. Burke, Warren has taken several steps to support sustainability.

Sustainability at the Workplace

Burke, Warren is committed to reducing paper usage and waste. We were early adopters of electronic document management where documents of all kinds are managed “virtually” and where printing is much less necessary, often occurring only when documents are complete. When we do print, recycling is a priority.  Recycling bins are located in every office and conference room, as well as in the public areas including lunchrooms. Within the lunchrooms, Burke, Warren uses environmentally friendly, biodegradable cups and plates.

Burke, Warren works to reduce its environmental footprint by investing in energy-efficient lighting and office equipment.  In addition to these efforts, our office space is located in the AMA Building, which received a LEED Silver certification. LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. To receive LEED certification, building projects must satisfy prerequisites and earn points to achieve certification. Recent renovations at Burke, Warren were done in keeping with the building’s LEED-driven efforts.

Sustainable Commutes

Burke, Warren helps reduce C02 generated from employee commutes by promoting transit usage through administration of the TransitChek commuter benefits program. This benefit allows employees to seamlessly pay for transportation on urban transit and suburban rail with pre-tax dollars. Our human resources department directs pre-tax dollars to employee transit passes each month, saving employees up to 40 percent on their commute and at the same time reducing harmful vehicle emissions owing to the large majority of Firm employees who commute by bus or train. Our employees who commute by bicycle can take advantage of the showers associated with the workout facilities that are available to all building tenants.

Sustainable Leases

Burke, Warren helps clients with their sustainability efforts through representation in real estate matters.  Members of the Real Estate practice group assist clients with “green leases” for environmentally responsible real estate development, energy efficiency, solar energy, and clean technology innovations. Representation has involved construction of and leasing space in LEED-rated buildings.

Support for Environmental Organizations That Contribute to a Sustainable Community

Our attorneys are encouraged to become engaged in their communities through involvement with various organizations, and many are involved in local or regional sustainability efforts. As an example, more than fifty firm attorneys participate in Chicago River Day, working to repair walking trails, removing invasive species, and picking up debris along the banks of the Chicago River.
